Developers detail name, brand and timeline for 223-key luxury hotel at Navy Yard

Ensemble Real Estate Investments and Mosaic Development Partners' full-service luxury hotel planned for the Navy Yard now has a name and a flag.

The 223-key property, located in historic buildings that once functioned as a naval receiving station and barracks, will be called The Waylen and will be a part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt. Ensemble/Mosaic are still finalizing the design and budget for the project but aim to break ground on the hotel in the third quarter of 2024.

The Waylen will span a total of 237,000 square feet. Ensemble/Mosaic plans to build an addition at the back of the 155,000-square-foot, U-shaped building to create an enclosed, half-acre courtyard for the hotel.

Operating under Hyatt's Unbound Collection flag, typically seen on boutique luxury hotels that reside in repurposed historic landmarks or vintage properties, allows Ensemble/Mosaic greater flexibility to design The Waylen specifically to fit the Navy Yard's history and current atmosphere.

"It really felt like a great opportunity to bring another Hyatt to the city and utilize that Unbound Collection to allow us to put our own stamp on the hotel to really allow us to fit into the fabric of the Navy Yard versus the hotel brand dictating what the hotel should be," Ensemble Managing Director Mark Seltzer told the Business Journal.
